From its now-seemingly archaic foundations in the sixties, the Internet has gradually progressed to what is now, through the World Wide Web, a complex distribution network based on packet switching and the routing and rerouting of packets along myriad networks and nodes. Subsequently, central control of such a vast system has been deemed impossible. The only variables that are within control are the ethics of those who develop and use the system.
Contrary to what may seem like an abandonment of principles at times, the Internet is actually subject to the same value system as other public communication systems; that is, the same values that form the foundation of our physical world also apply to cyberspace. The oft-exploited abuses of the system do not exempt it from society’s inherent moral law – laws that ultimately are implemented for the protection of children and all people; that guard against racial abuse, hate, and libel; and that contribute to copyright and consumer protection.
